Dog-Friendly Parks in South Australia: Permitted Walks and Limits

By Dr Duncan Houston

South Australia has parks where dogs can join you on a lead, but nearby places with similar names can have very different rules. Choosing the wrong side of a park boundary can turn a planned dog walk into a wasted trip.

Check the exact park, designated walking area and current alerts. A recreation-park label does not guarantee dog access, and a national-park label does not tell the whole story either.

Quick Answer

Belair National Park, Onkaparinga River Recreation Park, Para Wirra Conservation Park and designated walking trails at Cobbler Creek Recreation Park provide on-lead options. Granite Island Recreation Park and Mount Remarkable National Park do not permit pet dogs. Confirm the exact route on the current official park page and follow its lead, trail and closure conditions.

Four dog-friendly options to investigate

Belair National Park

Belair's official visitor information permits dogs under control on a lead no longer than two metres. Stay on designated walking trails, carry waste bags and check current entry arrangements and alerts before visiting.

Choose a particular walk rather than planning around the park name alone. Consider the route's surface, length and return options for the people and dog in your group.

Onkaparinga River Recreation Park

The recreation park welcomes dogs on lead under its stated conditions. Keep the distinction between the recreation park and similarly named adjoining protected areas clear when selecting a map or navigation destination.

A route suggested by a third-party app may cross a boundary without making the dog-access change obvious. Verify the full route, including the walk from the car park.

Para Wirra Conservation Park

Para Wirra's park page allows dogs on lead and designated trails. Check its alerts as part of planning: management-related closures can affect a park that otherwise welcomes dogs.

Review the relevant entrance and opening arrangements. The fact that a walking area permits dogs does not mean every gate is available at every time.

Cobbler Creek Recreation Park

At Cobbler Creek, dog access is limited to designated walking trails, with a lead no longer than two metres and effective control. Dogs are not permitted in other areas of the park.

Keep the trail boundary in mind around play, picnic and cycling facilities. A nearby open space is not automatically an extension of the permitted walking route.

Places to leave off the pet-dog itinerary

Granite Island Recreation Park explicitly prohibits pet dogs. A coastal setting and recreation-park name do not create a dog-walking exception.

Mount Remarkable National Park also lists pet dogs as prohibited. Do not rely on a general claim that selected sections allow dogs unless the current authority information specifically identifies a permitted area.

Assistance-dog arrangements are separate from pet access. Check the official authority's requirements directly if those arrangements apply to your visit.

Check access before choosing the route

  1. Confirm the exact park name. Similar names may refer to different reserves or management areas
  2. Read the dog section. Identify whether permission is park-wide or limited to designated trails
  3. Open the map. Match the entrance, parking area and complete walk to the permitted section
  4. Read current alerts. Check closures, management activity and changing conditions before departure
  5. Plan an alternative. Choose another permitted outing if the original route is unavailable

Fees, camping and vehicle access need their own checks. Dog-friendly walking does not establish campsite availability or permission for every accommodation option.

Make the walk practical for your dog

Bring water, a bowl, a secure lead and waste bags. Do not depend on a waterway, tap or bin being available. Keep identification and contact details current and save the route information you need.

Choose a manageable first visit. A walk's surface, gradient and exposure can matter more than the distance alone. A short route with an easy return can help you learn the area without committing to a demanding circuit.

Keep the day's conditions in mind and avoid treating completion of a planned route as an obligation. If the setting no longer suits the group, choose a shorter permitted option or leave.

Respect wildlife, trails and other visitors

Keep your dog from approaching wildlife and give other users space. A lead should allow you to physically control your dog without stretching across a shared path.

Stay on the designated route and take waste away. Do not allow your dog to roam into nearby vegetation, investigate wildlife resting places or enter a restricted section because it appears quiet.

Read and follow any management or baiting notices. If the signs or boundaries are unclear, contact the park authority before entering with your dog.

When should you change the destination?

  • Proceed: the full route is permitted, open and manageable for your group
  • Modify: a shorter or quieter permitted route is better suited to the conditions
  • Do not enter: a closure, prohibited-dog sign or uncertain access boundary conflicts with the plan

Do not leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle while visiting a place that prohibits them. Arrange a different outing or suitable care before travelling.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing Onkaparinga River Recreation Park with a similarly named protected area
  • Assuming recreation parks always allow dogs
  • Ignoring the designated-trails limitation at Cobbler Creek
  • Using old access advice for Granite Island or Mount Remarkable
  • Checking general dog permission but missing a current closure

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on Granite Island?

Pet dogs are not permitted in Granite Island Recreation Park.

Is all of Cobbler Creek available to dogs?

No. Dog access is confined to designated walking trails under the stated lead conditions.

Where is the best place to check a new destination?

Use the current National Parks and Wildlife Service SA park page, map and alerts, or the managing council's information for a council reserve.

Choose a confirmed route

A useful dog-friendly recommendation identifies the permitted area and its limits. Check the official information, keep the outing flexible and protect the wildlife and shared spaces you came to enjoy.

Access check

Access details were checked on 5 October 2026 against the linked official park pages. Conditions can change, so recheck the current notices and entrance signs before visiting.
