Havapoo Care: Grooming, Training and Health Screening

By Dr Duncan Houston

A Havapoo is a Havanese crossed with a Poodle. The name describes parentage, not a guaranteed size, coat, personality or health outcome.

These dogs can be affectionate companions, but the promise of an easy, non-shedding family dog often overlooks grooming, training and the needs of a growing puppy.

Quick Answer

Havapoos need regular combing, daily activity, gentle handling and practice being comfortable alone. Health screening should reflect both the Havanese and the actual Poodle variety in the parents. No Havapoo is guaranteed hypoallergenic, and being a crossbreed does not eliminate inherited disease.

What can you predict from the parents?

The Havanese is a sociable companion breed, while Poodles come in distinct size varieties. Ask whether the Poodle parent is Toy, Miniature or Standard, and meet the adults where possible. Puppies from similar crosses can still differ considerably.

Look beyond marketing labels such as teddy bear or teacup. Ask about adult weight, temperament, health records and how the litter is raised. Choosing for the smallest possible size can bring handling and feeding challenges that deserve a candid discussion.

A small dog still needs choice and personal space. Children should interact at floor level, avoid grabbing or carrying the dog, and leave them alone during meals and sleep. Supervise introductions to larger dogs.

Is a Havapoo hypoallergenic?

No breed or cross is reliably allergy-free. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that pet allergens are not limited to shed hair. A low-shedding coat does not establish that a person with dog allergy will tolerate the dog.

If household allergies are a concern, seek advice from a human allergy specialist before committing. Time with the individual dog may inform your decision but is not a medical guarantee.

Why grooming matters more than shedding

A soft, wavy or curly coat can hold loose hair and form mats. Check with a comb down to the skin, particularly behind ears, under the legs and where a harness rubs. A quick surface brush can leave hidden tangles untouched.

Many Havapoos need frequent, sometimes daily, home grooming and regular professional trims. Choose a manageable coat length and agree an interval with the groomer based on the individual coat. Painful mats need professional help; do not cut close to skin with scissors.

Introduce the brush, comb, dryer sound and paw handling gradually with rewards. Stop when the puppy becomes distressed rather than completing a battle. Keep the face clean without harsh whitening products and investigate red, squinting or persistently watery eyes.

Training, toileting and time alone

Offer toilet opportunities after waking, eating and play, plus enough additional breaks for the puppy's age. Reward promptly in the chosen place. Accidents indicate that the schedule or supervision needs adjusting, not that the puppy is being spiteful.

Use short training sessions for name response, recall and settling. Walks should include time to sniff, not just being carried between destinations. Match distance and play to age, health and recovery.

Begin brief separations while the dog is relaxed and increase gradually. Persistent vocalising, pacing, drooling or scratching at doors may indicate distress. A food toy or second dog does not reliably fix separation anxiety; seek a veterinary behaviour plan if the dog cannot cope.

Which health checks should you request?

Havanese screening recommendations include hips, kneecaps and eyes. Poodle testing varies with variety; Poodle Club of America screening information distinguishes relevant examinations and genetic tests.

Request reports for both parents, not only a statement that they were vet checked. DNA testing for one retinal disorder does not exclude every eye disease, and a large genetic panel does not replace joint or specialist eye examination.

Keep your Havapoo lean with measured portions of complete life-stage food. Small puppies may need more frequent meals than adults; ask your vet for an individual schedule. Begin daily toothbrushing and have persistent bad breath, retained baby teeth or difficulty eating checked.

What signs change urgency?

Concern Next step
Tangles without skin pain Adjust grooming promptly before mats tighten.
Repeated skipping on a hind leg, itchy ears or persistent tear overflow Book an examination; several different conditions can cause these signs.
A painful eye or repeated vomiting in a young puppy Seek same-day advice.
Collapse, trembling with weakness, seizures or difficulty breathing Contact an emergency vet immediately.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on a promise of guaranteed allergy safety.
  • Assuming crossbreeding replaces health screening.
  • Waiting for severe matting before arranging grooming.
  • Carrying the dog everywhere without teaching safe, confident walking.
  • Leaving a distressed puppy to cry until exhausted.

Frequently asked questions

How big will a Havapoo become?

Size depends on the parents and individual development. Ask for parental measurements and avoid sellers guaranteeing a tiny adult size.

Can a Havapoo live in a flat?

Yes, if toileting access, activity, noise management and companionship are practical. A small floor plan does not reduce social needs.

Do Havapoos shed?

Some shed little and others more. Coat type varies, and low shedding does not mean low grooming.

Are Havapoos healthy?

Many do well, but they can inherit disorders from either parent and develop ordinary canine illnesses. Evaluate evidence and the individual dog.

The best Havapoo care starts with realistic expectations: an individual dog, a coat that needs work and a routine that builds confidence and comfort.
